This month, clients in our Adult Day Program were given a detailed presentation from the La Grange Police Officers, Officer Taylor and Officer Huber on Community Safety. HH client, Phil, was recognized before the presentation, as he is an avid bike rider around La Grange.
Before the presentation, we asked clients what they were most interested in learning, which were:
- How to be safe
- Looking both ways before crossing the streets
- Importance of wearing seatbelts
- Putting out forest fires
The presentation and connection were made possible from the collaboration of all departments with great coordination from Vianca Avila, LMSW.
When asked about Avila’s experience with working with the La Grange Police Department, she shared,
“Working with Officer Taylor at the La Grange Police Department was so great as she asked for topics that would be best tailored to our clients’ needs, and she came up with a beautifully executed presentation. We learned the importance of notifying our staff where we plan on going and checking in as needed, the importance of not talking to strangers, why it’s important to pay for things we see at the store and even learned about being safe online to avoid scams from occurring!”
After the presentation, our clients shared genuine questions and their own experiences when practicing Community Safety. After questions, clients got to look at the inside of a police truck!
Avila explained, “The best part was seeing Officer Katie explain her gear she carries and why we need to make sure we give law enforcement personal space if we see them out in the community! Getting to see the sirens and gadgets in their police car was an extra perk that wrapped up the presentation nicely.”
We are incredibly grateful to Officer Taylor and Officer Huber for making our clients feel safe and supported in the community!
